What is Super Saiyan Blue in the Dragon Ball Super franchise?

‘Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan’ combines the state of Super Saiyan God with Super Saiyan

Recently, we had the opportunity to see gameplay for Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta. These two characters were announced as a pre-order bonus despite there already being other versions of Goku and Vegeta that will be playable.

So why is this transformation so important that additional characters slots need to be dedicated for these two? Is it really such a big deal?

As of right now, this form is the strongest that can be attained by the Saiyans. In order to understand what this power is all about, we need to talk about its other name.

Super Saiyan Blue is also known as “Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.” No, that’s not a typo or mistake on my part…

Despite how weird this alternate name is, it actually does perfectly fit how this status works. The second strongest transformation, the one with red hair, is known as Super Saiyan God.

Super Saiyan Blue is, put in layman’s terms, the act of combining Super Saiyan God with Super Saiyan (has golden/blonde hair, but without electricity). Hence, “Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.”

Just to put things in perspective, let’s take a look at how all the states scale in terms of power levels. Just how much do they escalate things compared to a Saiyan’s normal body?

First off, Super Saiyan is said to be 50 times stronger than the base form. This is a dramatic boost in strength and speed.

Super Saiyan 2, which makes a Saiyan’s hair spikier and adds electricity, is supposed to be two times stronger than Super Saiyan. In other words, this is 100 times stronger than a Saiyan’s base.

Finally, we have Super Saiyan 3. This transformation is four times stronger than Super Saiyan 2 or 400 times stronger than the normal state.

From here, details are not exactly clear. Super Saiyan God is the next step up, but we don’t quite know how much stronger it is compared to Super Saiyan 3.

It is clearly more powerful as it allowed Goku to go from losing to Beerus after two light taps in Super Saiyan 3, to actually being able to pressure Beerus, Universe 7’s god of destruction, at least somewhat. It is also important to understand that once Goku first ascended to Super Saiyan God, his base power actually became permanently stronger.

This is theory crafting on my part, but based on this information it actually sounds like Super Saiyan Blue is 50 times stronger than Super Saiyan God. Or maybe it just adds the energy of a Super Saiyan to a Super Saiyan God?

Nothing concrete has been confirmed as to just how much more powerful Super Saiyan God is to previous transformations. There also isn’t any confirmation to exactly just how strong the blue variant is compared to the red version.

Now while Super Saiyan Blue is just outright more powerful than any of the previously mentioned forms, there actually are pros and cons connected to using this power, or “god Ki.” Still, it’s kind of hard to imagine how characters like, for example, Krillin can cause Super Saiyan Blue Goku to be at all pressured.

Certainly the main disadvantage of using it is the enormous consumption of energy. Goku and Vegeta tend to reserve using this for the really tough fights.

As you might expect, there are definitely more advantages compared to disadvantages even outside of the raw power. For one, most individuals aren’t able to sense the energy of those that can maintain this god Ki.

Another benefit is that Super Saiyan Blue seems to be based more so on tranquility rather than the emotion that inspired the Super Saiyan from, which was rage. As a result, Kaioken can’t be used while in the Super Saiyan state, but the Super Saiyan Blue transformation can.

For the record, Goku using Kaioken in his Super Saiyan state against Pikkon only happened during filler episodes of the anime. This occurrence is considered to be non-canon.

A calm mind and focus is required for Goku and Vegeta to maintain this form. They are also able to hold back a great deal while using the god ki, unlike Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3, which pretty much puts them at their maximum at all times.

Despite how powerful Goku and Vegeta have become, they still aren’t strong enough to contend with characters like Beerus and Whis on their own. The first time this power was displayed, it wasn’t even stronger than Golden Frieza but they were still able to win since Frieza was not used to using his power by the time of their fight.

Since then, Goku and Vegeta have, theoretically, become stronger than Golden Frieza. This, despite Golden Frieza having also become stronger as time has gone on too.
